Other important things to keep in mind to avoid damaging your piercing:
-
Hair: Hair contains oil and dirt that can irritate your piercing. We recommend keeping your hair tied back to avoid contamination or accidentally pulling on the piercing.
-
Pets: Sleeping with your pet, allowing them access to your pillow, or letting them lick your piercing can cause a serious infection. Keep your pet away from your piercing and your pillow.
-
Pillow: Pillowcases can collect bacteria that may lead to infection. They absorb oil, dirt, and dead skin from your face and hair. Change your pillowcase frequently.
-
Phone: Phones are a major source of bacteria and can infect your piercing. Avoid letting your phone touch your piercing and keep it sanitized in case of accidental contact.
-
Towels: Towels carry bacteria and dead skin. Never clean your piercing with a towel use cotton swabs (Q-Tips) or paper towels instead.
-
Bodies of water: Do not swim in pools, lakes, or oceans while your piercing is healing. This increases the risk of infection.
-
Alcohol and acidic foods: Avoid spicy foods, citrus fruits, alcohol, and anything high in acidity, as they can irritate your piercing and delay healing.
-
Alcohol and smoking: These can weaken your immune system and slow the healing process.
-
Poor diet: A lack of proper nutrition can also weaken your defenses and delay healing.
Piercings require good hygiene and consistent care even after they’re healed. This is a commitment you take on when you decide to get a body piercing.
